We have long recognised that in order to deliver effective defence and high-end products you need strong security of the IT servers, firewalls and most often overlooked are the end clients. In the modern world of business - this includes various mobile tablets and multimedia-enabled smart phones.

We have seen benchmark after benchmark rate the major players and one has shone for a long time and that is SOPHOS. Not only is its R&D superb but it has implemented, what we believe to be the most effective of all, end client firewalls by barring everything and enabling only that which is approved to a set of carefully defined rules - application by application on the PC client - with the flexibility for that to be implemented uniquely per client or robustly enterprise-wide. That isn't where the excellence ends; the ability to prevent infection is crucial as many hacking routes hide such either as genuine peer-to-peer processes or through an email deployment. Don't overlook the threat of unsecure mobile devices to your corporate infrastructure. Many of these devices now receive your corporate emails and sensitive company data - which you may well have a legal obligation to secure. We have all been shocked by the Leveson Inquiry and how much of the telecommunication equipment and voice mails have such simple PINs (or that the PIN is default set the same as everyone else, or that it is off/disabled). That said, inbound threats via email, surfing the Internet or accessing through third party Wi-Fi networks may be exposing your employees and crucial company data to risks you haven't evaluated.  SOPHOS have a wealth of information on their website including a toolkit which is well worth looking at.
